The papers comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks, drafts, minutes, reports, cuttings, printed items, photographs, tape recordings and films. There are a few letters, references and printed works dating from Lake's early life, but most of the papers date from the late 1940s onwards. They document the later years of his long service with the National Library and in particular his work as the Liaison Officer in London and Chief Selection Librarian. There is also material of both an official and private nature relating to Australian films. The later papers deal with Lake's life in Balmain and his strong concern with environmental matters. Finally, there are a large number of letters from his mother and children.

The material discusses issues such as the impact of alcohol, together with land rights, health, housing and employment.

The papers include press clippings regarding World War II and defence issues and Sir Richard's career in the Air Force. There are also records concerning Sir Richard's O.B.E. award, his speeches, personal correspondence and printed material concerning aeronautics.

A cloth bound photograph album belonging to R.G. Casey compiled between 1915 and 1922, comprising of 52 photographs mostly captioned of a largely personal nature. The photographs capture images of family and friends as well as holidays to Mount Kosciuzko and New Zealand. There are also photos of General Birdwood's visit to Mount Morgan during his 1920 tour of Australia and New Zealand; as well as photographs of the Somme taken by H. Courtney Browne in 1922.
