The collection includes correspondence, photographs, notes, research material (primarily photocopies) and manuscript drafts relating to the researching and writing of Cochrane's book Simpson and the donkey: the making of a legend (1992). The research material gathered by Cochrane documents the life and legend of stretcher-bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who died in the Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Among the correspondents are Ken Inglis, Bill Gammage, Jim Henderson, Humphrey McQueen, John Hirst, John Herouvim, Peter Stanley, Barry York, Alan McLean, Craig Munro, Catherine Snowden, Ian Duffield, Chris Pugsley, Barry York, Ann Richter, Renata Howe and Michael Sharkey.(4 boxes).

Badges and pin backed buttons mostly donated to the collection by members of the public, including many collected in Adelaide by Mrs Fransine Brown (1904-1991) and her son, the Reverend Peter Brown (1936-2012). They relate to Australian charities, organisations, events, armed forces, public campaigns, patriotic causes and fundraising initiatives, and include badges or buttons commemorating specific events such as Australia's Commonwealth celebrations in June 1911, the 1918 Armistice, Anzac Day 1915, Navy Day 1918, and Empire Day 1946. Includes badges or buttons relating to Australian organisations or people such as the RSPCA, SIDS for Kids, AFL, Red Cross, the Australian Comforts Fund, Legacy, the League of Loyal Women of Australia, the Salvation Army, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Several badges from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s relate to the Vietnam Moratorium and other federal political campaigns.
