Abstract Or Scope
This collection is a mixture of material created by Joseph Cook, and material gathered by Mrs Mary Wood, his granddaughter. It consists of a small number of notebooks, a commission as NSW Secretary for Mines and Agriculture, an illuminated address, the text of the Treaty of Versailles, a passport, photographs, newspaper cuttings, and miscellaneous printed and photocopied material relating to Cook. The first part of this material was donated to the Library in 1968 by Mrs Wood. Subsequent material, also originating from Mrs Wood, was purchased from a book dealer in 1995.

The collection largely comprises records, 1893-1909, of the Australasian Federation League of New South Wales, the United Federal Executive and Central Federation League of New South Wales, including minute books, letterbooks, lists of speakers, accounts, cuttings and correspondence. The collection includes scripts of at least 80 plays, such as The Squatter's daughter and The Man from outback, as well as loose, untitled pages of playscripts and notebooks. Bert Bailey is most famously associated with the theatrical and film versions of On our selection, Dad and Dave come to town and Dad Rudd M.P. which are well documented here by scripts, stage directions, loose scripts, press cuttings, photographs and legal documents. Also featured are theatre programmes, posters and acting editions of plays. Press cuttings, printed matter and photographs include numerous theatre personalities. Personal and family correspondence and memorabilia are also included, notably an extensive collection of draft stories written by Doreen Bailey.

The Human Veins Dance Theatre records encompass the full range of dance company activities - administrative and financial papers including details of government grants, general and production files, publicity and reviews, a collection of photograph albums, programmes, some art work, and videos and cassettes. The collection provides a comprehensive record of the life of a contemporary dance company.

The papers relate mainly to the work of C.A. Burmester as a senior member of the staff of the National Library of Australia and to his scholarly and bibliographical activities in the years after his retirement in 1971. They include reports, minutes, and other internal documents of the Library, correspondence, speeches and talks, draft bibliographies, and copies of his unpublished memoirs. There are papers relating to the Conference on Source Materials for Australian Studies (1961), the National Book Resources Development Committee, and the Humanities Research Centre of the Australian National University. The papers were received in a highly disorganised state and to a large extent the existing order has been imposed by Library staff. They have been arranged into ten series, six of which relate to phases of his career as a librarian and three of which document his retirement activities. The correspondents include Rex Nan Kivell, John La Nauze, L.F. Fitzhardinge, Dan Sprod and Allan Fleming.

This collection comprises instalments that contain medical patrol reports from Papua New Guinea and research papers and correspondence on the Mount Lamington eruption, Australian prisoners of war who died on board the Montevideo Maru and other topics connected with the war in the Pacific and Papua New Guinea in general. There are also research notes for Gordon Thomas's publication 'Prisoners in Rabaul: civilians in captivity', personal correspondence, and papers relating to Speer's wartime service and overseas travel.
