The collection provides a snapshot history of the development of Australian Studies in China over the 20-year period from around 1997 to 2017. The Australian Studies in China Program is a national organisation that has contributed to debate and shaped social change.

This collection includes papers relating to the personal and academic life of Emeritus Professor of Musicology Allan Marett and include: correspondence; reviews; interviews; journalism; lecture notes; concert programs involving Marett as consultant, author, performer and scholar; newspaper and magazine cuttings; records relating to radio programs and interviews including four programs on Aboriginal music for 2MBS and six programs on Japanese music for the ABC; drafts, reviews, correspondence and texts of the plays Eliza and Oppenheimer; correspondence regarding prizes and appointments; invitations and personal family documents including those relating to the musical life of Marett's parents. Also included are records resulting from two ARC projects on the 13th Century Japanese flute score Chû Ôga Ryûteki Yôroku-fu in the Gagaku tradition (Japanese Imperial Court Music and Dance), comprising a copy of the original tablature score, transcriptions of all pieces and an analysis of the structure of these pieces.

MS 9891 comprises correspondence and subject files kept by various office holders of IAML from the period leading to its inception in 1970 up to 2000; treasury records; and membership records. The records from the earlier deposit were largely kept by Prue Neidorf (President to 1988), Werner Gallusser (Secretary, 1970-1975), and Ian Miller (Secretary, 1975-1978). The later deposit, received in 2004, consists of records that appear to have been assembled and arranged by a number of office bearers from 1975-2000.
