- Biographical / Historical:
-
Mary Nolan (1926-2016) was born Mary Elizabeth Boyd at Murrumbeena, Victoria, the daughter of Merric and Doris Boyd and sister to Arthur, Lucy and Guy. Mary's first marriage was to artist John Perceval, with whom she had four children. She travelled to London in 1963, during which time she photographed her family and other Australian artists in London, briefly returning to Australia in 1965 before settling permanently in the UK. Following her second marriage to Sidney Nolan in 1978, Mary Nolan documented their travels to China, Africa and Australia in diaries and photographs. After Nolan's death in 1992, Lady Mary Nolan established the Sidney Nolan Trust.
- Listing and Rehousing Note:
-
The Library has preserved the original physical and intellectual arrangement of the collection. The negatives arrived in boxes (or "batches"), with packets (or "groups") of negatives inside each box, with each grouping of negatives annotated with the relevant "batch" and "group" reference, e.g. Batch A: Group 1. "Sub-Series" content description notes were transcribed from annotations on the original housing. The titles of individual images were derived from an itemised list supplied by the donor.
Please note that the "Group" numbering for "Batch A" starts at "3".
