Background

Biographical Note:

He was departmental historian in the 1960s until his retirement at the end of the decade. In the 1970s, when Cumpston was an ANU Visiting Fellow and Helen also worked at the ANU, he visited the United States of America, photographing on microfilm 3,500 whaling log-books, resulting in the largest collection of these log-books in the world.

J.S. Cumpston died in 1986.

Purchased as part of the Papers of John Stanley Cumpston by the National Library of Australia from his widow Helen in 1986.

Map collection accessioned in 1989.

Arrangement:

Numbering imposed, based on the order of hand written listing for each folder, possibly generated upon accessioning.
