Content Summary:

Journals kept by Hodgkin on voyage on the Orontes from Tilbury to Melbourne (January-March 1909), and during his trips to Tasmania, New Zealand, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and journey back to England on the Orontes and Otranto (November 1909-January 1910).

He was accompanied by his wife Lucy Hodgkin, his daughter Violet Hodgkin and his son George Hodgkin. The principal purpose of the trip was to meet Quaker communities in the main Australasian cities and to attend the General Meeting of Australian Friends in Adelaide.

Includes impressions of places he visited, members of the Quaker communities in the main Australian cities, and the General Meeting of Australian Friends in Adelaide.

The journals contain some photographs of people, including the General Meeting at Adelaide, and cuttings, mainly of interviews with Hodgkin.

Biographical / Historical:

Thomas Hodgkin (1831-1913). Banker and historian. Educated at Grove House, Tottenham, and University College, London. In 1859 he helped establish the banking firm of Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease and Spence at Newcastle upon Tyne, and he remained a partner until it was absorbed by Lloyds Bank in 1902. In his spare time he pursued historical and archaeological studies, his most outstanding work being Italy and her invaders, published in 1879-1899. He was an active member of the Quaker community.
