Biographical / Historical:

Herbert Vaughan (1832-1903), later Cardinal Vaughan, Archbishop of Westminster, founded the missionary seminary St. Joseph's College at Mill Hill in 1866. In New Zealand the Marist Fathers had established Maori missions as early as 1838 but after 1850 there were few Marist Fathers left in the Auckland Diocese. The Bishop of Auckland, J.E. Luck, asked Bishop Vaughan to send some missionaries and the first two Mill Hill missionaries, J. Becker and J. Madan arrived in December 1886. The first mission stations were at Matata and Rotorua. Two more missionaries arrived in 1888 and by 1900 there were 17 Mill Hill Fathers working in New Zealand. Mill Hill missionaries have continued their work within the Diocese of Auckland up to the present day.
