Background

Content Summary:

Papers 1888-1905 of Sir William Hillier Onslow, 4th Earl of Onslow, Governor of New Zealand 1889-1892. Subjects include: Maoris; Federation of Australia; Chinese crisis in New South Wales; defences of New Zealand and Australia; and New Zealand birds. Correspondents include Queen Victoria, Lord Knutsford, Richard Seddon and J. Chamberlain. Also papers of his son Sir Richard Onslow including an account of a visit to Australia and New Zealand 1889-1890.

Letters 1922-1941 of Arthur and Fred Gammon of Kaikohe, New Zealand, to Harold Gammon referring to conditions of soldiers' settlement farm and impact of the Great Depression.

Papers 1854-1865 of Martin Ware comprising letters from former boys of Ragged Schools and Shoeblack Society referring to Australian churches, life at the Ovens River diggings, Maori War, work on railways in Queensland, and Australian Aborigines. Also journal of Martin S. Ware kept on journey to North America, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand 1911-1912.
