The genealogical material comprises 24 family trees, primary and secondary material, and correspondence of the Ireland and Carter families in England, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

The Bonham Carter family are descendants of John Bonham Carter (1788-1838), a British Member of Parliament and barrister. The son of Sir John Carter, he assumed the name Bonham by Royal Licence when he inherited the estates of his cousin Thomas Bonham.
John Ireland (1930-2011) was a secondary teacher and headmaster with an interest in genealogy, who collected the family archive that had been passed down over four generations. Ireland was descended from the Bonham Carter family, who had been influential in the United Kingdomn for over 300 years.
The collection includes material from John Ireland's paternal great grandfather, RD Ireland, a leading criminal barrister in Melbourne, politician and Attorney-General in Victoria in the 1860s. RD Ireland is remembered for his defence of the Eureka Stockade rebels.
The Ireland and Bonham Carter families became linked when Richard Davies Ireland's son, de Courcy married the daughter of John Markham Carter in 1880. The Irelands also married into other leading families in Melbourne: Warburton Carr, E.M. Curr, the Gurners and the Rowes.

The collection was formed by the amalgamation in the 1880s of two separate collections of the Ireland and Carter families. It was added to by subsequent generations. The collection was purchased from Theresa Palligaro, a representative of the Ireland family, in March 2013.
