Biographical / Historical:

The William Salt Library opened in Stafford in 1872 and has occupied its current building since 1918. William Salt (1808-1863), whose grandfather was the founder of the Stafford banking company Stevenson Salt Company, was a London banker and antiquary. He assembled a large collection of books, pamphlets, manuscripts, watercolours, drawings and transcripts. After his death, the collection was donated to the county of Staffordshire. The Library is administered by an independent trust, with the support of the Staffordshire County Council. Assisted by the Friends of the William Salt Library, it continues to collect printed material relating to Staffordshire.
