Background
- Content Summary:
-
In 2002 the National Library of Australia acquired the Matilda collection, including approximately 890 items including original cartoons, sketches and photographs published in the twelve issues of the satirical Matilda magazine, from March 1985 to June 1986. Matilda captured the public opinion of the political and social events of the consumerism driven 1980s, with irreverence for which the magazine became renowned. Matilda attracted sixteen defamation writs from outraged politicians, judges and bereaucrats which eventually resulted in the demise of the magazine. The editor of Matilda, Robbie Swan was assisted by the publisher Roger Lilford and Richard Refshauge, Phillip Adams and Rick Farley while contributors included Germaine Greer, Richard Neville and Barry Humphries. Other contributors included cartoonists Michael Leunig, David Coombe, Bill Leak, Geoff Pryor, Bruce Petty, Alan Moir, Bill Farr, Peter Fairlie and Geoffrey Atherden. Photographers John Ogden, Bruce Postle, Bill Errington, Huw Davies, Peter Morris, Lorrie Graham, Nic Ellis, Peter Solness, Michael Bowers and Rennie Ellis.
In addition to the cartoons and photographs published in the journal, the collection also includes many unpublished images, printer's proofs, advertising copy, page mock-ups, two sculptures, copies of the cover pages mounted on particle board and other promotional material.
