Background

Content Summary:
Tourist maps, mostly of Victoria, collected by Alan Ives. One map is of New South Wales, and one of South Australia/Northern Territory. Some Victorian maps are annotated with names, including R.D. Croll and R.H. Croll.
Biographical Note:

Alan Ives was born in Sydney in 1946. His father, Walter, was one of the original staff of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, later working for CSIRO, and becoming the head of the Commonwealth Department of Primary Industry. Alan's mother, Betty, worked for the Rural Bank of New South Wales and served in the Women's Royal Australian Air Force before getting married. She was also a book collector.

Ives grew up in Melbourne and London. He studied geography and history at Monash University, where he aso learned bibliographical skills. After working in Melbourne and Weipa, far north Queensland, Ives had a labourer job in Dampier, Western Australia, which allowed him to collect maps, plans, engineering and other drawings.

From 1971 to 1973 Ives worked at the National Library of Australia as a librarian in training, and serial and picture cataloguer. He then began working at the Commonwealth Archives Office (which became the National Archives of Australia).

In 2006 he joined the Friends of the National Library of Australia Committee, and served for several years.

This biographical note compiled with information from Books, books, books, books stacking up in piles again: Alan Ives as book collector, by Gary Kent, and an obituary by Anne-Marie Schwirtlich in Archives and Manuscripts, Volume 45, Issue 3 (2017).

Immediate Source of Acquisition:

Acquired by the National Library of Australia ca. 1971.
