Content Summary:
MS 1884 comprises correspondence, diaries, notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, subject files, press cuttings, pamphlets, souvenirs, printed items, photographs, glass slides and other memorabilia relating to all aspects of General Sir John Monash's life and career. The collection includes juvenilia and items dating from Monash's school and university days. The correspondents include Hannah Victoria Moss (whom he married in 1891), J.T.N. Anderson (business partner), Mathilda Monash (sister) and other members of the Monash family, J. Gibson (business), Walter Rosenhain, Clara Stockfeld, Eva Blashki, Rose Blashki, Minnie Blashki, Jeanette Krakowski, Ada Krakowski, Kitty Lunday, Amy and Evie Corrie and Rose Schield.
Provenance:

Although the papers were given a temporary listing as long ago as 1967 it was not until 1980 that the collection was officially presented to the National Library and later physically transferred to the Manuscript Collection through Dr Serle. The donors were Monash's three grandchildren, David and Colin Bennett and Elizabeth Durré.

Copying of unpublished material for research purposes is permissible 50 years after the death of the creator of the material.

With regard to photocopying, under the guidelines given by the donors, the Library may, at its own discretion, supply readers with single copies of limited portions of items in which the Monash family hold copyright, for the purpose of research or private study. The Library may also give permission for the publication of limited portions of manuscripts, for the purpose of quotation, or of photographs where the Library believes this is appropriate (copyright in these items being held, of course, by the Monash family). However, the Library may not give permission for the publication of any substantial portion or selection from the manuscripts, or of any significant number of photographs, or for any copying for these purposes.
