Shaw Neilson to James Devaney: A series of letters 1934-1941. 148pp

Component identifier:
Item 68
Content Summary:

An intimate correspondence of biographical and literary significance, covering the whole period of their friendship. Emphasis is, of course, upon the poet's own work, but there are many items of personal and family interest, mention of everyday topics, and the work of other writers. The letters reveal Neilson's dependence upon his friend for criticism and counsel. He often expresses his gratitude to Devaney for the furtherance of his interests and on occasion for financial assistance. Although Devaney drew heavily upon these letters for his biography of Neilson, much remains unpublished which will be valuable for the further assessment of Neilson's life and poetry.

All the letters are at Neilson's dictation, signed by him "J.S. Neilson". Although it was customary with Neilson to deplore his lack of education and his inability to write prose, these deficiencies are not apparent. He dictates fluently and gives his facts with clarity. Frank Neilson, Lisette Neilson, and Annie McKimm have all contributed their share of the writing, which although at times is not in conformity with the strictly academic calligraphy, is always perfectly legible. In fact, at times, Lisette writes an excellent script.

The letters are tipped into half-morocco album.
