Background
- Content Summary:
-
The Captain Joseph James Collection comprises letters, papers and photographs relating to the James and Cherry families. The collection provides one of the most complete records of an immigrant family's activities that has survived.
The papers had been preserved and offered to the Library by Mrs Phyllis Tuson, the great-grand-daughter of Captain Joseph James. They were deposited in the Library with the help of Mrs Jennifer Baume, wife of Senator Peter Baume and daughter of Mrs Tuson.
Captain James owned a brigantine, the Daphne, which traded between India and Australia. In 1813 it was the scene of a mutiny. The papers consist of logs, articles of agreement, financial records, legal documents and letters relating to the James family and the Daphne; and letters, photographs and documents relating to the Cherry family (the next two generations), including World War I letters and some written to Mrs Tuson by family acquaintances Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton.
