This collection comprises three consignments received between 1989 and 2006.
The first consignment includes research notes, newspaper cuttings, correspondence, drafts, transcripts, reviews and oral history interview notes relating to Stokes's book, United we stand: impressions of Broken Hill, 1908-1910, recollections and photographs from the period (1983). Includes transcripts of the diaries of James Wooler and Frank Bartley. Also available: Research notes, correspondence and drafts relating to Stokes's book on the Sturt expedition, To the inland sea: Charles Sturt's expedition 1844-45 (1986). Also included is a typescript transcript of Sturt's field journal, 1844-1845 and excerpts from his narrative of the expedition. Also included: Card title documents of Lord Ashley, C.N.J. Oliver and Lord Colin Campbell for the Byron Lodge Estate, 1853-1882; marriage certificate of H.M. Robinson and M.P. Oliver, 11 May 1882; death certificate of A.A. Cooper, 2 July 1886.
The second consignment includes drafts and related material for Stokes's published works, United we stand: impressions of Broken Hill, 1908-1910, recollections and photographs from the period (1983), To the inland sea: Charles Sturt's expedition 1844-45 (1986), The photography book (1990), The desert coast: Edward Eyre's expedition 1840-41 (1993), Innocents abroad: the story of British child evacuees in Australia, 1940-45 (1994), and, Across the Centre: John McDouall Stuart's expeditions, 1860-62 (1996).
The third consignment comprises manuscript drafts of Stokes's book, Hong Kong's wild places: an environmental exploration (1995), together with drafts of the synopsis and chapter plans, production documents (including cover design and correspondence with sponsors and Oxford University Press), publicity and feedback (including reviews and personal and official letters of congratulation, 1995-1996) and a copy of the published work with extensive text revisions in preparation for a second edition.
