Background

Biographical Note:

Herbert James ("Jim") Gibbney graduated with honours from the University of Western Australia in 1950, at the age of 27. He then joined the staff of the Commonwealth National Library in Canberra, and in 1952 transferred to its Archives Division which, in 1961, became a separate organisation. In 1965 he was appointed as a research officer with the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB), where he remained until his retirement in 1983. During this time he assembled more than 80 entries for the ADB.

His abiding interest was Australian history and its sources. He published a number of books and articles including Labor in print, 1975; Eurobodalla: a history of the Moruya district, 1980; and Canberra, 1913-1953, 1988. He completed his M.A. at the Australian National University while working for the ADB, and completed his Ph.D.. on the history of Canberra, 1913-1953 in 1988.

Jim Gibbney died in Canberra in August 1989.
