The Australian Labor Party (ALP) is the oldest political party in Australia. Its origins go back to the 1890s when separate parties, sponsored by the trade union movement, formed in the Australian colonies. When the former Australian colonies federated in 1901 the ALP became a federal party. In Victoria there were no strong and coherent labour party until after federation when the Victorian Branch of the ALP was formed.
