The collection dates from 1909 to 1938 and contains correspondence, speeches, Hansard reports, articles in both handwritten draft form and typescript, notes taken on foreign tours, biographical material collected by Mrs L. Needham, Charles Hawker's sister, photographs and press cuttings.

The material relates to Charles Hawker's early life as a pupil at Geelong Grammar School, his student days at Trinity College, Cambridge, active service as an officer in the First World War, his subsequent return to Australia and his public career as a Federal member of Parliament.

The collection is divided into subject series for each of which there is a brief description.
