Background

Content Summary:

The Australian Student Christian Movement, until 1913 known as the Australian Student Christian Union, is the Australian branch of the World Student Christian Federation (W.S.C.F.) It is active mainly in Universities but also in schools and teacher training colleges.

The records held are the national level records of the A.S.C.M. Two-thirds of the collection consists of correspondence, the greater part being to and from the presiding General Secretary (until 1907 the presiding Travelling Secretary.)

The other third consists of minutes and reports relating to National Executive, General Committee, Business Convention, State Councils, Schools and Conferences. Included also are the records of the Student Volunteer Movement (S.V.M.) 1896-1919, and the records of the Foreign Service Fellowship, which appears to succeed to S.V.M., beginning in 1927.

The remaining material consists of records of special committees and commissions, finance, visits from prominent overseas speakers, W.S.C.F. reports, memoranda and memorabilia.

Immediate Source of Acquisition:

The initial transfer of these records by the General Secretary of the A.S.C.M. was in 1958. Removal from Melbourne to the National Library in Canberra took place in 1963.
