Content Summary:

The collection contains a variety of political, business and personal papers, printed materials, press clippings and correspondence. In addition to papers relating to O’Byrne’s Parliamentary career, there are papers relating to the Australian Labor Party, the Australian National University, overseas investment in the Australian hospital industry, the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park Board and the Tasmanian Scenery Preservation Board.

The main part of this collection was received in June and August 1981. A further small consignment, including papers reclaimed by Senator O’Byrne in 1983, was received in 1995, and is described at the end of this list.

Biographical Note:

Justin O’Byrne was born in Tasmania in 1912 and was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Launceston. During the Depression he went to Queensland where he took up droving, boundary riding, shearing and station overseeing. In 1940 he joined the R.A.A.F. as a pilot and became an original member of the 452 Fighter Squadron which operated with No. 11 Group during the Battle of Britain. He was shot down over France in 1941 and was a P.O.W. in Germany for over three years.

He was elected Senator (A.L.P.) for Tasmania in 1946 and served as Opposition Whip from 1962-72. He was Government Whip from 1973-74 and President of the Senate from 1974-76. Widely known as ”father of the Senate”, he retired in June, 1981. He served on a number of Government Committees and was a member of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park Board and the Tasmanian Scenery Preservation Board.
