Background
- Content Summary:
-
On 1 July 1988 the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographic Services (AACOBS) merged with the Australian Libraries and Information Council (ALIC) to form the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services (ACLIS). A voluntary association, ACLIS represented the interests of more than 900 member libraries and information services, lobbying governments on strategic issues and fostering national cooperation until its disbandment in December 1998. As well as supporting research projects and providing services to members, the Council played a major role in the development of initiatives and services such as the Distributed National Collection, standardised collection policies, collection evaluation (Conspectus), regional networking, the national bibliographic database, interlibrary loans and preservation of library materials.
The collection was transferred to the National Library in four separate consignments in October 1991, and November and December 1998 (two instalments received). Together the files represent a comprehensive record of ACLIS' achievements over the decade of its existence, including the activities of its various committees, working parties and task forces.
In arranging the folders, ACLIS' original filing and file-naming system has been retained, incorporating three different numbering sequences. A number of files were noted as missing prior to their transfer to the Manuscript Collection, and where these occur the omissions have been recorded on this list.
Records of AACOBS and ALIA (MS 9320) are held in the Library.
