Henry Deane's papers include: correspondence and printed material relating to his work as Engineer-In-Chief in charge of Commonwealth railway construction, notably the Transcontinental (Kalgoorlie to Port Augusta) railway; newspaper clippings and photographs covering his career and other interests, notably botany, concerning which there is also a quantity of correspondence (with J. H. Maiden and Baron von Mueller, among others) and notes and specimens relating to his work on Australian fossil flora and native timbers.
Mathilde Deane was a research student and amateur writer. Her papers include: correspondence connected with her historical and private research; copies and extracts of despatches and other documents concerning 19th century Australia; newspaper clipping, photographs and publications relating to travels with her father, family affairs and other interests, notably Theosophy.

The introduction of steam tramways in Sydney and the building of the first Hawkesbury railway bridge were undertaken during his term of office 1906 Retired from service with New South Wales Railways 1906-08 Practised as consulting engineer in Sydney 1908 Appointed controlling engineer for the survey of the Transcontinental (Kalgoorlie to Port Augusta) railway 1912 Became Engineer in Chief in charge of Commonwealth railways construction branch, and supervised the building of the Transcontinental railway 1914 Retired from Government service and returned to Melbourne to practise as consulting engineer 1924, 12 March Died - Immediate Source of Acquisition:

The papers were presented to the Library by Mathilde Deane of Reigate, Surrey in 1958 and 1963. Correspondence concerning Henry Deane's work in the fields of botany and palaeontology has been indexed (see Appendix 1)
