This collection comprises a handwritten pharmacist's notebook by John A. Anderson, who owned a pharmacy in Melbourne in the early 20th century. The pharmacy known as Anderson's Chemists, Cathedral Drug Store, was located at 39 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Listed are detailed ingredients for tooth powders and pastes; throat sprays; perfumes including 'Essence Civet', 'Essence Millefleur' 'Peach Blossom' and Essence Heliotrope'. Included also are the quantities of ingredients required to make a household ammonia; a dye for Pampas Grass; silver cleaners; vermin killers; varnishes; ink for rubber stamps; Eucalyptus soap; turps and wax cream furniture polish; washing liquids; sealing wax; a weed destroyer; toothache tinctures; Chlorodyne; shampoos; sulphur hair restorers; incense and smelling salts. Towards the front of the notebook John Anderson also lists the ingredients to produce Blanc Mange Powder; Raspberry Vinegar, Dandelion Cocoa and Peppermint cordial. Additional pages dating from 1894 have been inserted into the notebook including a printed copy of 'The Chemist and Druggist' providing practical notes and formulae for preparing a Macassar Oil and Pomade for styling the hair.
