Content Summary:
The collection includes papers concerning Pike's work as General Editor of the Australian Dictionary of Biography; his publications Paradise of dissent: South Australia, 1829-1857 ( 1957) and Australia: the quiet continent (1962); his work as an academic, particularly at the Australian National University; and his involvement with the Australian Humanities Research Council. The collection also includes general files; general correspondence; referees reports; articles, a thesis and other writings by Pike; notebooks; notes, bibliographies; photographs; cutting books and printed material.
Biographical Note:

Douglas Henry Pike was born in Tuh Shan, West China in 1908, the son of missionary parents. He was educated at China Inland Mission Schools at Chefoo, North China.

1947 Graduated with a BA from the University of Adelaide with First Class Honours in History. Awarded the Tinline and John Lorenzo Young scholarships

Provenance:

The Pike Papers were donated in two instalments by Pike's widow in 1977 and 1984.

Arrangement:

The second instalment of the Pike Papers was received in a disordered state. The files named 'Bibliographic files' and 'Academic and historical files' and the referees reports formed discrete groupings. Other arrangements have been imposed by Manuscripts staff. The contents of most files have been retained in their original order.
