Content Summary:

MS Acc09.044 comprises a combination of books, business records, correspondence, discs, ephemera, certificates, clippings, conferring of degree booklets, handbills, programmes, scrapbooks, journals, memorabilia, music manuscripts, photographs, posters, prints, printed sheet music and a sketch. The contents cover the period 1891-2007 (98 boxes, 15 folio boxes, 8 map folios, 1 large rolled items box, 1 phase box, 1 folio packet).

The MS Acc09.085 instalment comprises records relating to the Conservatorium that include student enrolment cards, 1938-1971, photographs of graduating students, CDs of student performances and ephemera. There are also papers relating to Nellie Melba, which include books, sheet music and voice recordings (CDs and a 78rpm record) (5 boxes, 1 fol. box).

The MS Acc09.123 instalment is a small collection of papers assembled by Amy Sanders, and originally donated by Roger Sanders (Amy Sanders' nephew) to the Melba Conservatorium of Music. The papers include: letters from Fritz Hart to Amy Sanders; concert programs for Conservatorium students' concerts (in which Sanders performed) and a performance of two of Fritz Hart's operas; black and white photographs of Hart at a garden party in 1931; handwritten notes headed "Preliminary comments by Madame Schumann" dated August 1950; a small number of press cuttings of concert reviews; Sanders' report cards for the years 1931-1934 from the Conservatorium; and an autographed copy of Elisabeth Schumann Liederbuch favourite songs (1 packet).

The MS Acc10.011 instalment consists of a framed letter from Professor G.W.L. Marshall-Hall to Harold Elvins's father, dated 23 December, 1909 (1 fol. item).

Biographical / Historical:

Established as the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music in 1901, the Melba Conservatorium of Music is a semi-private institution in Melbourne, managed by a Council which is affiliated with the Victoria University. Dame Nellie Melba associated herself closely with the Conservatorium and taught there from 1915 until her death in 1931.
