Background

-
The collection provides a comprehensive record of the Greenpeace campaign and the international negotiations that took place in the 1980s to protect Antarctica in perpetuity as a reserve for science, wildlife, wilderness and peace. Antarctic themes covered by the collection include the impact of climate change, waste management, mineral exploration, wildlife protection, fishing and whaling, marine oil pollution, the environmental impact of scientific research, tourism, legal issues and the future of the Antarctic Treaty System. The collection documents Greenpeace's Antarctic Expeditions, Australia's Antarctic policy, national Antarctic research programs, and the lobbying work of other non-government organisations.
The collection comprises correspondence, discussion papers, submissions, meeting documents and reports, conference papers, articles, factsheets and information packages, newsletters, media releases, press cuttings and Greenpeace publications. Among the Greenpeace International documents included are submissions to the annual 'Question of Antarctica' debates in the General Assembly of the United Nations, and the annual Expedition Reports.
The treaties, international bodies and their meetings documented in the collection include the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the International Institute for Environment and Development, the Antarctic Treaty, the Madrid Protocol, the Convention on the Regulation of Antarctic Mineral Resource Activities, the Commission for the Convention on the Conservation of Marine Living Resources, and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs.
