In 1980 Newton accepted Rupert Murdoch's invitation to write a daily economic and financial column for the New York Post. While in the United States he founded Maxnews Financial Network Inc., a financial consulting and publishing firm which published daily, weekly and monthly financial reports. With his newsletters New York Money Market Report and Maxwell Newton: confidential money report Newton advised pension funds, money market managers, brokerage houses, investment banks, government securities dealers and wealthy individuals in the United States. His weekly reports on Central Bank's Action and the Capital Markets and Global Currencies Opportunities were faxed throughout the world. He also published The Fed, a monthly magazine of central banking and the capital markets and a sister monthly newsletter Fed Update.

The papers were purchased by the National Library from Mrs Olivia Newton in 1992.
