- The collection comprises correspondence, subject files, lecture notes, and articles, theses, conference papers, reports and other writings by Hotchkiss. The papers primarily relate to Hotchkiss' work an academic with the University of New South Wales and include papers relating to his sabbaticals in Fiji and Sierra Leone. There are also files relating to adult education and other courses taught by Hotchkiss as well as material relating to transport issues in New South Wales, Broken Hill mines, and industrial relations.

William Ernest Hotchkiss was born in Sydney in 1920 and was educated at Canterbury Boys' High School. After leaving school he worked for the New South Wales Department of Road Transport and Tramways. Hotchkiss served in the AIF during the Second World War in Egypt, New Guinea and the Pacific. On return to civilian life, he joined the New South Wales Department of Motor Transport based in Parkes, Broken Hill and Sydney. In the 1960s he studied for a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney and graduated with a Masters of Economics in 1967.
After graduating, Hotchkiss worked as a teacher of business studies at Sydney Technical College and a tutor in Government at the University of Sydney before joining the University of New South Wales as a tutor in Economics. Hotchkiss worked as a lecturer in Economics (1968-73), senior lecturer in Industrial Relations (1973-82) and an administrative officer with the School of Industrial Relations at the University of New South Wales. During his career with the University he completed periods of sabbatical in Sierra Leone (1975), the United Kingdom, the United States, Papua New Guinea, India, Samoa and Fiji (1979). His academic interests and research have revolved around transport economics, development economics and industrial relations. Hotchkiss has published journal articles, chapters in books and research reports prepared for Government bodies.
Hotchkiss was a committee member of the Industrial Relations Society of New South Wales.
