Background

Content Summary:
The collection comprises forty-nine handwritten and typed letters written by Gwen Harwood to Barry Hassell Keane, between 1973 and 1995. The letters are a combination of practical comments, suggestions of journals to send poetry to for publication, poetry prizes to enter, news, and chat of daily life. The letters reflect the role a nationally significant poet played in mentoring a fellow poet and author. Three of the letters from Gwen Harwood to Barry Hassell Keane were published in 'A Steady Storm of Correspondence', in 2001, by the University of Queensland Press and edited by Greg Kratzman, appearing on pages 304, 337 and 356. Poetry written by Barry Hassell Keane is also included accompanied with Gwen Harwood's comments, notes and suggestions on his poetry throughout many decades. The majority of the pieces commented on in these notes were included in Barry Hassell Keane's collection 'West of the Divide' which he forwared to Angus and Robertson in either 1983 or 1984. A complete copy of the manuscript 'West of the Divide' written by Barry Hassell Keane, two handmade greeting cards both featuring a photograph by Gwen Harwood, two greeting cards sent to Gwen Harwood by her daughter, Mary Harwood, postcards, and newspaper articles are also included in the collection.
