Barry was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria in January 1947, and was a member of the Chief Justice's Law Reform Committee from 1955 until 1967. He presided at a number of notable criminal cases but after 1957 his judicial work was confined largely to the Divorce Court.
The series includes a small amount of administrative correspondence with W. Slater, Sir Arthur Rylah, G. Sawer, F.R. Nelson and others (1947-1969). The other papers concern Statute Law Revision reports on the law of defamation (1956) and the law of perjury (1958), proposals for reform of the law relating to suicide (1965) and motor manslaughter (1967), and finally Barry's judgements in the cases of R. v. Jenkins, ex parte Morrison in 1949, R. v. Galvin in 1961, R. v. A di Ciero in 1966 and R. v. Wiesse in 1969, together with many press cuttings of his cases.
Further references to Barry's judicial work are to be found in series 1 and series 20.
