Content Summary:

In 1955 Barry was appointed Chairman of a committee to inquire into juvenile delinquency in Victoria. A. Stoller and D. Barrett were the other members. In the course of compiling the report Barry corresponded with Sir Arthur Rylah, Stoller, F.H. Rowe, A.R. Whatmore, R. Hoban and others. These letters together with copies of the report, tabled in July 1956, notebooks, drafts and background printed matter are included here (items 1-145).

This subseries is followed by correspondence with W.R. Dovey, M. Lopez-Rey, R.H. Hicks, S.H. Porter, and J. Hetherington, and publications which Barry used in preparation for a report entitled Certain aspects of juvenile delinquency in Australia in 1959. This report was commissioned by the U.N. Section of Social Defence (items 146-338).

There is correspondence in 1960 with J.P. Conrad and R. McGee of California who invited Barry to join an advisory committee to undertake an international survey of correctional research and practice, made possible by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Conrad's final report is included together with printed material (items 339-380).

The series concludes with a copy of Barry's lecture on juvenile delinquency delivered at the Hobart Town Hall in 1961, 'A collection of papers relating to certain aspects of juvenile delinquency in England and Wales' submitted by the Cambridge University's Department of Criminal Science to the Fifth International Congress of the International Society for Social Defence in 1958, J. McCall's report entitled Observations made overseas on the treatment of juvenile offenders in 1959, and the transcript of three public lectures given by Albert Morris on the modern treatment of delinquency in 1960 (items 381-629).
