Background

Content Summary:

A collection of documents relating to the 24th Prime Minister of Australia, The Honorable Mr P J Keating. This collection includes copies of newspaper articles, transcripts, press release and speeches curated and created by Paul Keating over a 50 year period from 1969 to 2023. Also included are articles relating to The Gospel According to Paul by Jonathan Biggins. The collection also features a catalogue of the PJ Keating Audio-Visual Archives, providing information on the audio-visual materials which are held by the National Film and Sound Archives.

Paul Keating personally selected each of the preserved newspaper articles from city newspaper editions "...to record that which, on relevant days, I thought to be important to the national story". Full pages were scanned to retain the context of the article in relation to other articles and to reflect editorial decisions about the placement of articles on the page. The newspapers were scanned in black and white by Paul Keating's office. Each folded newspaper was ironed before scanning.

The newspaper series comprises 13,833 items. The series of transcripts, press releases and speeches cover Paul Keating's period as the 14th Prime Minister of Australia from 1991 to 1996 and contains 1,260 items. A full list of each speech, press release and transcript, and the subject to which they relate, is included as the first item within each file. The audio-visual catalogue series comprises 1 item.

Immediate Source of Acquisition:

The digital files were created and donated to the National Library of Australia by Paul Keating in 2023, transferred on a single 2 TB portable hard drive. The content was extracted from the disk to create master preservation and delivery copies in the National Library of Australia's Digital Library Collections system.

Arrangement:

Files have been maintained in their original chronological order. To aid discovery each file title, which was originally a single unbroken string of text, has been parsed so that the control number is separate from the main title, and where possible the name of the originating newspaper has been separated into distinct words. Two empty folders were deleted: "1994 Transcripts Jan-Sept94 - Missing" and "1995 Transcripts Jan-Sept95 - Missing".
