This small collection of letters consists mainly of inwards correspondence received by Sydney art collector, Oscar Paul, from various Australian artists. The correspondents include Arthur Streeton, Hans Heysen, Blamire Young, Norman and Rose Lindsay, Septimus Power, James MacDonald, Elioth Gruner and Gother Mann.
The letters provide an insight into the level of friendship that developed between an artist and an art collector during this period and also their common circle of acquaintances in the art world.

Walter Oscar Paul graduated from the Philadelphia Dental College (DDS) in 1904 and from Harvard University (DMD) in 1905. In November 1905 he was registered as a dental surgeon by the Dental Board of New South Wales. He commenced as a general practitioner in Sydney on 1 December 1905.
Paul was an active member of the dental profession in New South Wales. In 1909 he was appointed as examiner in Orthodontia and Mechanical Dentistry by the Dental Board of New South Wales. From 1910-1922 he was an examiner in the subject of Orthodontia. During this period he also held positions in various dental associations including Honorary Secretary of the Odontological Society of New South Wales (1910-1919).
Paul was also a keen art collector. His collection which was donated to the National Gallery of Australia in the 1960s included works by Australian artists: Penleigh Boyd, Albert Fullwood, Elioth Gruner, Hans Heysen, George Lambert, Norman and Lionel Lindsay, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Blamire Young. Paul's collection of antique furniture was also donated to the Gallery.
Oscar Paul died on 4 January 1970. He was survived by his wife, Mollie, and his daughter, Jacqueline. His son, Richard, pre-deceased him (1963).

The papers were passed to the Library by the Prime Minister's Department in 1966.

The letters have been arranged by artist and then by quantity of correspondence. The majority of the letters are from Arthur Streeton (around three-quarters) and these have been listed first. These are followed by letters from Hans Heysen, Blamire and Mabel Young, Norman and Rose Lindsay and Septimus Power. Single letters have been listed last.
Correspondence from Arthur Streeton also includes letters from Henry Calloway and Margaret McLean, artists representatives who were corresponding with Oscar Paul while Streeton was overseas. There are also some carbon copies of letters written by Paul to Streeton and his representatives. Letters from Blamire Young and his wife, Mabel, and Norman and Rose Lindsay have also been grouped together.
