- Content Summary:
- The collection comprises correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes and some printed material. Most of the papers relate to the development of the pastoral industry and the activities of the Liberal Party's Federal Rural Committee between 1960 and MacKinnon's death in 1965. There is some correspondence relating to McKinnon's term of office as Ambassador to Brazil.

Donald MacKinnon was born on 30 April 1892 in Melbourne. He was educated at Geelong Grammar School, Ormond College and New College, Oxford. His studies were interrupted by the First World War during which he served in the the King Edward Horse in France. After the war he worked in the meat industry in Britain and during 1930s and early 1940s managed Vestey's meat interests in Argentina.
In 1946 MacKinnon returned to Australia to manage the Marr Y Estate in Terang, Victoria. He was a member of the Victorian Inland Meat Authority; State President of the Liberal Country Party of Victoria 1949-1950 and Chairman of the Liberal Party's Federal Rural Committee 1948-1959 and 1962-1965. MacKinnon was the Australian Ambassador to Brazil between 1958 and 1960. He was leader of an Australian trade mission to South America in 1962. MacKinnon was awarded the C.B.E. in 1958.
MacKinnon died on 2 May 1965.
