- The log books in this collection were originally held in the records of the Registrar-General of Shipping in the Public Record Office in London. In about 1970 it was decided to retain only a sample of the holdings of log books. The collection was split between various institutions, with the largest collection going to the University of Newfoundland. A sample of log books of Australian interest was selected for the National Library by Alan Villiers in 1971.
