Background

Content Summary:

Material in the Australian performing arts programs and ephemera (PROMPT) collection consists of programs and related items of Elsie Morison including various concert programs of her performances.

Further programs and ephemera featuring Elsie Morison are contained elsewhere in the PROMPT collection, filed under the name of the company she was working with, such as the Sadler's Wells Opera, Welsh National Opera, Royal Opera etc.

Elsie Jean Morison was an Australian soprano who was born in Ballarat, Victoria on the 15th of August 1924. She studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and at the Royal College of Music, and burst on to the postwar musical scene in London with stunning performances in concert and opera. She made her English concert debut at the Royal Albert Hall in 1948, and is remembered for her roles in some of the most important musical events of the day, including the English premiere of Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmelites in 1958, alongside the young Joan Sutherland. She became well known for her recordings of her work. She married the great Czech conductor Rafael Kubelik in 1963. She died in Prague on April 5, aged 91.

The list is based on imperfect holdings and is updated over time as gaps in the Library's holdings are filled.
