Background

Content Summary:

Dr Norman Bartlett was a journalist and an author. His papers include correspondence and personal papers, note books, commonplace books, diaries, manuscripts, drafts of published and unpublished books, copies of articles and short stories, book reviews, theses, files of research and general interest material and photographs. Bartlett's correspondence relates to his work as a journalist and writer, his wartime experiences, his work as Information Attaché in Bangkok, Tokyo, New Delhi and London, his academic life and subjects of interest to him. There is personal correspondence between Bartlett and his wife, Evelyn, other family members and friends.

Evelyn Bartlett was a children's author. Her papers consist of correspondence including personal correspondence with Norman and other family members, diaries including details of her travels, drafts of some of her writings, collections of newspapers and magazine cuttings on subjects of interest to her, memorabilia of her travels with her husband and some wartime and family photographs.

Provenance:

The collection was donated to the Library by Dr Norman Bartlett in 1981 with an addition in April 1989. After Bartlett's death in 1992, a further addition was donated by his nephew, Michael Paul, in February 1996.

Arrangement:

The current series structure is largely imposed by Library staff. Norman Bartlett's arrangement of correspondence, drafts and subject files was inconsistent. Throughout his life Bartlett recycled his ideas, reused his notes, converted an idea from an article to a book or used a chapter of a book as an essay or short story. This manner of working is reflected in his arrangement and labelling of files. Material in files labelled by Bartlett has been maintained in that order. Material not organised by Bartlett into files has been arranged by Library staff into series of similar material and then arranged chronologically into folders.
