Background

Content Summary:
The collection comprises two volumes which record company events organised by The Argus newspaper during 1887 and 1888. The volumes are handwritten, the records probably compiled by an accounts clerk (presumably 'J. Brash') working for William Spowers. William George Spowers (1856-1932) was the proprietor of Melbourne newspaper The Argus during the years that these records were kept. The entries record the names of all invited guests, including members of the Spowers family, staff and their families, journalists from other newspapers, politicians, and prominent citizens. Also detailed are the arrangements for catering and musicians (Herr Plock and his band from Glen's, Collins Street), railway tickets and reservations for outings, children's entertainment (Weston's Punch Judy, South Melbourne), and costs for the printing of programmes. The Argus was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period.
