Background

Content Summary:

On 14 October 2023, Australians voted in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. This collection documents a forum held in Rockdale Town Hall as part of the preceding campaign. The Minister for Indigenous Australians the Hon Linda Burney MP was a member of the forum panel.

The 'Does Australia need an Indigenous voice to Parliament?' forum, organised by The Centre for Independent Studies (CIS), was held on 31 August, 2023. Panel members included Warlpiri/Celtic woman and Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Bundjalung man and Director of the Indigenous Forum at CIS Nyunggai Warren Mundine, Leader of the Opposition in South Australia David Speirs, and Tom Switzer, the Executive Director of the Centre for Independent Studies.
