Background

Biographical Note:

Edward Francis Campbell was born in Kalgoorlie, W.A. on 7 Jan. 1908, the son of Edward and Ethel Campbell. He was educated at Perth Boys' School, the University of Western Australia (BA, Dip Ed) and the University of Melbourne (BEd). Campbell was a teacher with the Western Australian Education Department until 1939 when he resigned to join the Australian Army. He served in the Second World War as an artillery officer, in the headquarters of the 3rd Australian Army Division in the Pacific.

Campbell married Rose Scarborough on 21 December 1936 and had a son Stuart and daughter Heather. He died in Melbourne on 16 May 1996.

Provenance:

The collection was donated to the Library as part of the Dudley Glastonbury Papers (MS 9387) by Rosa Glastonbury in 1992. The papers were given to Dudley Glastonbury by Campbell to assist him in his research into the history of the public service in Papua New Guinea.

Papers of Edward Campbell compiled mainly while a member of the Social Change Advisory Committee of the Department of External Territories and as a consultant to the Psychological Services Branch of the Public Service Board in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. The papers include reports by Campbell, correspondence, minutes, agenda papers, notes, newspaper cuttings, articles, photographs and other papers.
