Component identifier:
Series 3
Content Summary:

Withers was appointed a Liberal Senator for Western Australia on 17 February 1966 and served until his retirement from politics on 5 June 1987. The papers in this series mainly comprise an incomplete sequence of files numbered 1-51 maintained by Withers relating to his service as a member of Parliament. The files contain speeches and writings by Withers, cuttings, drafts of important letters, statistics, and notes. Files 5, 7-8, 13, 16, 39, 43, 45, and 48-49 were not received with the papers. Other files, arranged roughly in chronological order, relate to censorship, Withers' sacking by Malcolm Fraser as Minister for Administrative Services in 1978, taxation and Withers' retirement from the Senate in 1987.

Other papers relating to Withers' parliamentary career can be found in series 1/23 (correspondence congratulating Withers on his election as Senator), series 5 (speeches), series 7 (newspaper cuttings) and series 8 (photographs).
