The collection comprises Edward Stokes' photographic collection for his publication United We Stand: Impressions of Broken Hill, 1908-1910. The majority of the photographs are taken by James Wooler (1873-1944), a photographer who created a detailed pictorial record of Broken Hill between 1908-1910. The collection covers life in Broken Hill including photographs of the sporting events, horse races, picnics, school groups, parades, abattoirs, trains, the mines and the 1909 miner strike.
Biographical / Historical:

Edward Stokes is a historian who has published histories of Broken Hill, New South Wales, Charles Sturt's 1844-1845 expedition into the interior of the Australian continent, and British child evacuees to Australia during World War Two.

James Wooler was a part-time professional photographer. He migrated from Yorkshire, England to Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1907, where he was employed as the official photographer for The Barrier Miner. Wooler and his family then moved to Balaklava, South Australia in 1911 where he continued his photographic activities for the next 30 years.
