- Caption 'The two main methods of underground mining at Broken Hill were in 'timber' and 'open' stopes. Timber stopes were supported by 'square-sets' of heavy timbers, whereas open stopes had no roof support. Most miners preferred working in timber stopes which they believed were safer'.
