Background

Content Summary:
This collection of black and white photographs includes images of the competitors and pilots of the Victorian Centenary Air Race in Melbourne in 1934. There are photographs of the procession through Melbourne with crowds celebrating the participants, including the winners British fliers C.W.A. Scott and Tom Campbell Black, and South Australian pilot C.J. (Jimmy) Melrose. Scott and Campbell Black were winners of the speed section of the race in a red DeHavilland 88 Comet. They reached Melbourne in two days 23 hours 18 seconds, with a total air time of 71 hours. Second fastest with an air time of 81 hours 10 minutes. Their flight showcased the viability of aviation in connecting Australia with the rest of the world, and in particular the route from Australia to England which took up to six weeks by ship. The Vauxhall cars used in the celebration procession are featured in the images with the details of all Vauxhall cars included. Also included are images of H.R.H, Duke of Gloucester during his tour of New South Wales, and group images of men possibly at the General Motors Australia Brisbane Branch Dealers Convention, 1928. The collection is accompanied by a typed list of captions with names of people and details of Vauxhall cars in photographs, and original brown cardboard box in which the photographs were housed.
