The papers comprise correspondence, drafts, typescripts, research material and photographs for Souter's published works: New Guinea: the last unknown, Lion and kangaroo: the initiation of Australia, 1909-1919, Acts of Parliament: a narrative history of the Senate and House of Representatives Commonwealth of Australia, Company of Heralds: a century and a half of Australian publishing by John Fairfax Limited and its predecessors, 1831-1981 and Heralds and angels: the house of Fairfax 1841-1990.
Also included are the manuscript of an unpublished book 'Cocos: a history of the Clunies Ross Family', and miscellaneous items pertaining to the Australian Society of Authors and the Films Board of Review.

Gavin Souter was born in Sydney in 1929. He graduated from Sydney University.
Souter worked as a journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald (1947-87). He was commissioned to write the bicentennial history of the Commonwealth Parliament (1983-87) and histories of John Fairfax Limited (1978-81; 1987-90). His other appointments included Vice President of the Australian Society of Authors (1975-78) and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Films Board of Review (1981-84).
Souter's publications include New Guinea: the last unknown (1963), Lion and Kangaroo: the initiation of Australia (1976), Acts of Parliament: a narrative history (1988), Company of Heralds (1981) and Heralds and angels: the house of Fairfax 1841-1992 (1992).

The collection was acquired in three instalments: the first and second consignments (Series 3 4) were donated to the National Library by Parliamentary Library in 1988; while the latter was donated by Souter in 1992 under the Tax Incentives for the Arts Scheme.
