The collection comprises of photographs donated to the National Library by Kenneth Russell Henderson during his tenure as editor of the Hemisphere magazine. The majority of the photographs are of Indonesia including scenes from Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara Islands, and Kalimantan. Many of the photographs of Indonesia are sourced from Departemen Penerangan (Department of Information); which existed from August 1945 to 1999. The collection also features photographs from Switzerland; many of which show residential buildings in the Alps destroyed by a Foehn storm (Föhnsturm).

Kenneth Russell Henderson was a journalist. He began his career as a journalist for the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) from 1938 until World War Two, during which he served in New Guinea and the Philippines in Signal Intelligence. In 1947, he became the head of the English service in the overseas service of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation and worked as the Swiss correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). In 1958, Henderson opened the ABC's first bureau in Indonesia where he lived for the next 3 years before returning to Switzerland. Henderson returned to Australia and was the editor of Hemisphere magazine from 1969 until the journal's demise in 1984.
