Background

Content Summary:

Records of the Youth Affairs Council of Australia (YACA) and its predecessor, the National Youth Council of Australia (NYCA).

The records of the National Youth Council of Australia include Council, Executive Committee and Management Group meeting records, records relating to the constitution and structure of NYCA, papers of conferences and meetings attended by NYCA staff, subject files, reports and publications of NYCA and others, records relating to the Asian Youth Council, International Women's Year 1975 and the National Youth Advisory Group.

The YACA records include Management Committee and Policy and Programs Priorities Committee meeting records, records relating to YACA administration and organisational structure, state youth affairs councils, finances, relationships with government departments and youth organisations, YACA conferences, youth policy and services, and youth issues including accommodation, education, employment, environment and health. The collection also contains files relating to international youth affairs, the National Youth Affairs Inventory Project, the Youth Services Documentation Project, and International Youth Year as well as videos, tapes, photographs, slides and computer discs.

Provenance:

The records were donated by the Australian Youth Policy and Action Coalition in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

Arrangement:

The records of NYCA were received in a largely disordered state, although the files in series 1-4 and 6-8 were grouped together.

Most of the records of YACA were filed in a coded sequence (series 12). While some sections of the sequence required little intervention, others were in a disordered state and included unnumbered files and loose papers. Where possible, material which was found amongst the filing sequence and related to it was assigned appropriate numbers from the control lists. Files which could not be incorporated were placed in the miscellaneous section of the subject lists (series 15).

Of the remaining YACA records, series 18-19 and 22-25 were kept together in groups.

Series 23-24 contain videos, tapes, photos and slides which were kept together but relate to both NYCA and YACA.

Around eight cartons of financial records of YACA such as receipts, bank statements, computer printouts and cheque stubs were discarded. Mock-ups of publications produced by YACA were also discarded.

A large quantity of publications were sent to the Australian book and periodical collections. Posters are held in the Pictorial Collection.
