After fifteen years as Concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Llewellyn resigned in 1964 to devote his time to full-time teaching. He intended to teach privately in Wollongong, Goulburn, Mittagong and Canberra, and to establish regional orchestras. A year later in September 1965, at the invitation of the Department of the Interior, he became founding director of the Canberra School of Music, which was located in converted buildings at Manuka. He immediately set about achieving a 'centre of excellence' in a permanent building that would be the most suitable environment for study and performance. In September 1976 the new and permanent building was opened. Llewellyn remained director for 15 years.
School of Music papers include correspondence, conditions of employment, appointments, diploma and degree requirements and course programs, papers on the establishment and opening of the new building, Advisory Council minutes, applications for the position of the new director, and Llewellyn's retirement.
